DODGERS CONTINUE WINNING

WAYS AGAINST GOODWOOD

Colonel Light Gardens SA ~ 3 November 2024

The Golden Grove - Central Districts Dodgers continued their winning ways with a convincing 15-3 victory over the Goodwood Indians in Baseball SA Little League play last Sunday at Mortlock Park, Colonel Light Gardens.

The Dodgers extended their unbeaten record to 4 wins and 0 loses in the Ron MacBeth Little League Division, with steady pitching, menacing base running, and an 11 hit offence.

Big Blue jumped out to an early lead against the home side, scoring five runs in the opening inning, two in the second, another five in the third, and then added another three in the final frame to finish with a flourish.

“ It was a solid win on Sunday against Goodwood, a developing team." said Dodgers Coach Davey Roach. “It was a great opportunity to implement some of the habits that have been a focus in our trainings and before games. We struggled to put balls in play against top quality pitching in our recent game against Kensington, so our goal was to be more aggressive on good pitches and I definitely think we achieved that against Goodwood."

Cameron Majewski topped the Dodgers hitting attack with two singles and a double, with Ashton Mogg and Noah Soar, two singles each, Chevy Roach with a double, and Hunter Ung, Caleb LeCouteur, and Chase Mazurek, each contributing singles.

“Selfless batting meant we were able to move runners around the bases and score runs, and not rely on their poor pitching to get us runs.” added Roach.

Noah Sutherland and Noah Soar, shared the pitching duties for Golden Grove, combining for 6 strikeouts and limiting the Indians to just one hit.

“A positive pitching performance from starter Noah (Sutherland) who followed up a week of effort fine tuning his mechanics in preparation for his start and was able to bring it for 1⅔ innings before honourably handing the ball to Noah (Soar) with a big smile on his face, and that was a clear indication he was happy with his performance.

Soar was then able to follow up on his strong performance last week against Kensington, with a further 2⅓ innings,” commented the satisfied Dodgers Coach.

The Dodger pitching duo actually carried a no hitter into the final inning when Goodwood’s Hunter Walsh broke up the no-no with two out, by beating out a slow rolling nubber in between home plate and the pitchers mound for an infield single.

The great start to the 2024-25 season has Roach and his coaching staff Darryl Soar, and Joel Mazurek continuing to analyse their lineup, searching for areas of their game to work on as they prepare to go up against stronger opposition in the coming weeks.

“The win over Goodwood was great preparation for our hitting game as we get ready for our game against East Torrens next week", said Davey.

"We’re looking forward to maintaining our positive momentum heading into this important game against the Red Sox, another team I'm predicting will be a finals contender.”

DODGERS WIN THE BATTLE FOR FIRST PLACE
WITH DECISIVE WIN OVER EAST TORRENS
Surrey Downs SA ~ 10 November 2024

The Golden Grove-Central Districts Dodgers moved into sole possession of first place in the Baseball South Australia Little League Ron MacBeth Division with a decisive 11-5 victory over the East Torrens Red Sox, in a battle between the two northeastern Adelaide rivals on Sunday 10 November at Illyarrie Reserve, Surrey Downs.

“Today’s result over a strong team like East Torrens, was confidence building and will certainly be a stepping stone as we solidify our place as a strong finals contender” boasted a happy Dodgers Coach Davey Roach, after the win.

Both teams scored runs in the opening 2 ½ innings, with Golden Grove opening the scoring in the bottom of the first when Hunter Ung drew a walk and then rounded the bases to score on Cameron Majewski’s triple to left field off East Torren’s ace pitcher Zac Gratton.

The Red Sox then evened the score in the top of the second when Gratton, batting, reached first base on a passed ball after striking out against the Dodgers starter Noar Soar. Gratton then advanced around the diamond to score on a stolen base and two passed balls.

In the bottom half of the second the Dodgers’ Noah Sutherland led off with a walk, and then put his team back in front by advancing the bases on two passed balls, before sliding home safe on a wild pitch.

The Dodgers scored two more in the bottom of the third, and then catcher Jack Adams’ bases clearing triple ignited a five run fourth inning, breaking open the match and giving The Grove a seven-run buffer, and from they never looked back. Sutherland and Soar also added doubles for the Dodgers, with Ung hitting a single.

Ethan Lee led the East Torrens batting with a single and a double, while Joshua Bell, two singles, Hamish Lee, double, and Aaron Davis, and catcher Oscar Patman both recording singles.

Gratton showed plenty of flair on the mound for East Torrens, striking out eight, but three walks, Majewski’s triple, a single by Ung in the third, and aggressive base running by the Dodgers accounted for four runs, and the Sox ace was replaced in the fourth by Josh Bell. Then came a five run onslaught off Bell in the fourth, and it was Aaron Davis who took the ball for the Red Sox in the final two digs.

“Despite the top pitching performance from Zac (Gratton), we were able to once again take advantage of our on base opportunities with heads up base running resulting in multiple runs” noted Roach.

"Our base running is proving to be a crutch for us against top teams but we have work to do in the batting box. Five hits and just eleven balls in play for a six-inning game is not the formula for long term success. We’ll use the upcoming games and trainings to address this area of our game “expressed Roach. “But I’m assured our coaching staff can bring out the confidence in our players that we’ll need against top pitchers.”

Dodgers starter Noah Soar turned in a steady outing, but he also got crucial backup from his teams’ great fielding to escape any major threats from the strong East Torrens lineup.

“Credit to Noah Soar for his solid 3 ⅔ innings pitching, before we broke the game open. His strong outing allowed an ideal game situation for Chevy (Roach) to take the ball at the midway point” added Roach.

Roach fanned three, and then scattered four hits over his 2 innings of work, before handing the ball to Majewski in the sixth. East Torrens did mount a three-run surge in the top of the sixth, but the Dodgers big lead and their solid defence, assured the win.

Golden Grove snuffed out several Red Sox rally opportunities with several defensive gems, starting in the first inning when catcher Jack Adams threw out Red Sox runner Joshua Bell on an attempted steal of second, followed by a tailor made double play from second baseman Noah Sutherland who flipped a ground ball over to shortstop Cameron Majewski, for a perfect 4-6-3 DP in the third inning.

In the fourth, the Dodgers continued to frustrate East Torrens batters, when Cameron Majewski made a great sliding grab deep in the hole at short. Majewski was quick to jump back to his feet to complete a beautiful throw to nail the runner at first. Two batters later, and with Red Sox runner Ethan Lee at second, centre fielder Caleb LeCouteur raced in to scoop up a one hopper on Hamish Lee’s line drive double, and then launched a “Hail Mary Bomb” to Adams at home, who made the tag on the lead runner (Ethan) Lee who attempting to score from second.

Coach Roach made a key defensive move late in the game, shifting Noah Sutherland into right field. Sutherland, a former East Torrens player, and now in his first year with the Dodgers, made a nice running catch on a flyball and then made a heads up throw to second base to double up a stray Red Sox runner.

“Our fielding today was by far the best example of what can happen when you put in the time and effort training with purpose” said the Dodgers skipper. “We often acknowledge the mundane nature of some of the drills, but to the teams credit they have bought the skills learned from those drills to our game plan, and it showed on Sunday with multiple breath taking plays,” Roach said.

East Torrens sparkplug Eli Davis also made a couple of fine defensive plays at second base in the fifth inning, when he snagged two sharply hit ground balls and threw out two runners allowing the Red Sox to retire the Dodgers in order.

“We saw some great plays made with some good pitching”, commented East Torrens Head Coach Anthony “Bubba” Dienelt. “At this level, we are focused on teaching the fundamentals of the game and how to play the right way in situations, rather than focusing on the end results”.

Meanwhile the Dodgers coach wasn’t getting too complacent with the win over their northeastern rivals. “Despite our six run win over a top side like East Torrens, I’m not confident of an outright win if it had not been for our fielding. We will continue to work on all aspects of our game in the hope of maintaining our winning standard for the remainder of the season. “ he said.

Following Sunday’s win, Golden Grove now occupy first place with an unblemished 5 wins and 0 loses record, while East Torrens and Kensington sit in second place, following Kensington’s weekend victory over Northern Districts.

COACHES INCENTIVES STIRS DODGER BATS IN ROMP OVER WOODVILLE

Surrey Downs S.A. ~ 17 November 2024

A coaches promise of ice cream and other fun events in exchange for more offense has proven to be a lucrative incentive for the Golden Grove-Central Districts Dodgers who powered their way to a 15-2 romp over an inexperienced Woodville Senators side in Baseball South Australia Little League action Sunday at Illyarrie Reserve, Surrey Downs.

The Dodgers pounded out 10 hits, led by Chase Mazurek’s two triples, Noah Sutherland’s single and a double, Jack Adams’-double; and singles to Hunter Ung, Caleb LeCoutuer, Noah Soar, Chevy Roach, and Ben Gobell, combined with solid pitching, and a rare fielding play, all contributing to the win and extending their unbeaten run in the minor round fixture.

“A solid win against developing team Woodville, and with many aspects of our skills improving, the focus between now and Christmas is on fine tuning our approach at the plate in anticipation of strong pitching in the finals”, commented Coach Davey Roach following the win. “It’s a credit to the kids’ willingness to allow the coaches to coach, and the result is essentially safe hits and balls in play to all the players” he added.

The popular Dodgers skipper and his coaching staff have introduced some mid-season incentives for his players to improve on their offensive output, and his troops didn’t let him down, scoring five runs in the bottom of the first, third, and fourth innings.

A promise of ice cream sundaes at club sponsors Pickled Duck for more than 40 balls hit into play, lunch at Waterworld for more than 60, and more than 80 balls in play earns them games of bowling at Zone Bowling Tea Tree Plaza and has sparked new energy into the Dodgers lineup as they move on toward the halfway mark in the 2024-25 season.

Darryl (Soar), Joel (Mazurek), and I felt there was a hesitancy to swing at good hittable strikes which we felt could lose us games in the finals, therefore we intend to hone in on this by prohibiting advancing the bases on steals and pass balls,” Roach announced on the club chat site recently.

Chevy Roach started on the mound for Golden Grove pitching 2 strong innings, striking out four, and allowing only one run, before handing the ball to Hunter Ung in the third. Ung also performed well for the final two digs, fanning three Woodville batters and allowing only one run.

“A solid effort by Chevy and Hunter, keeping their pitches close to the zone and forcing Woodville to swing the bat. As a team we have now given all our pitchers a start this season and know if the strikeouts aren’t happening then we have our fielders to make the plays as they come,” said Roach.

Golden Grove first baseman Jack Adams orchestrated a rare triple play in the second inning, with Woodville runners at first and second, he caught a line drive off the bat of Woodville’s Kylah Ding, and then quickly stepped on first before firing to second to get both runners and retire the side on the one play.

Mochi Vuong was the top hitter for Woodville with a third inning double, with Major Sumner adding a single. On the mound the Senators used three pitchers, starting with Kylah Ding, followed by Chris Vlahos, and finishing with Sumner.

The visitors crossed the plate in the first inning, but from that point onward the young side were overwhelmed by the home team’s solid pitching and offence, and only managed to score once more, in the third inning.

The Dodgers added two players Ben Gobells, and Nathan Burns from their U11 team, filling in for regulars Ashton Mogg, and Cam Majewski, who were both away with other commitments.

“Well done to Ben and Nathan” echoed Roach, “they both did a great, and we’re confident these two are ready to make the transition to the U13s next season”.

The win improves the Dodgers record to 6 wins and 0 loses and sole procession at the top of the 11 team Ron MacBeth Little League Division, with just three games remaining prior to the Christmas break.

This Sunday-(24 November, the Dodgers will travel to Mitcham for an 11:00am game against the fourth placed Sturt Saints (5-1).

DODGER BATS EXPLODE IN
BIG WIN OVER STURT

Mitchem S.A. ~ 24 November 2024
The Golden Grove Dodgers exploded for 18 hits last Sunday to hammer the home side Sturt Saints 15-5 in Baseball South Australia Major Little League action at the picturesque Sturt home field in Mitcham.

The Dodgers opened with six hits in the first inning, scoring the maximum five run limit per inning, and then added five runs in the third, three in the fourth, and two more in the fifth to run away with the victory, and remain undefeated in the 11 team Ron MacBeth Division.

“Another great win,” said a happy Dodgers coach Davey Roach after the game. “It was a fantastic display of confident batting against Sturt, another likely finals contender. Our focus on developing a confident approach at the plate is heading in the right direction with everybody swinging the bat well."

Cameron Majewski, two singles and a double, Noah Sutherland, and Ashton Mogg, both with three singles, led the Dodgers hitting, while Jack Adams, two doubles, and Noah Soar, triple and a single, Caleb LeCouteur, and Hunter Ung each with two singles, and Chase Mazurek adding a single, rounding out the offensive barrage.

Golden Grove pitchers Cameron Majewski, Hunter Ung, and Ashton Moog each went 1⅔ innings scattering seven hits, and allowing only two walks to record the win. Majewski fanned five, while Ung, and Mogg each registered three strikeouts.

“Congrats to Cameron, Hunter, and Ashton on an awesome combined effort” added Roach. "All three never looked in trouble at any point, showing plenty of poise and calmness that will serve them well as we play out the season.”

Sturt replied with a single run in their bottom of the opening inning, then three in the third, and one in the fifth, but the Saints were never within reach of impressive Dodger lineup.

Leadoff batter James Wadham led the Saints with three hits, while Sunny Cassell, double and single, and Oliver Kirsten, and Steven Lee added singles, while Tommy Collins, Noah Crabb, and Alec Kent shared the pitching duties.

The win improved the Dodgers first place record to 7 wins and 0 losses, while Sturt dropped to 5-2 on the ladder.

“The boys let very few strikes go by, and we’re recognising more good pitches and taking the opportunities to put balls in play and advancing our runners abundantly," noted Roach.

A few weeks back Roach and his coaching staff of Darryl Soar, and Joel Mazurek initiated an incentive of ice cream, swimming, and bowling for the Dodgers to start putting more balls in play and the team has welcomed the challenge with plenty of gusto. “The boys are very much invested in our 'Ball in Play Challenge' and with 38 on the board they only need 2 over the next couple games to win their Ice Cream Sundaes at club sponsor Pickled Duck,” Roach explained. “But we may need to hold off on too much ice cream” he said with a laugh, “ that might slow them down on the basepaths”.
